On this page you will find OSNC special events, information on Central Ontario singing, and information on UK singing. Just scroll down for more information.

Several times each year, we have a special event. We gather for an informal group singing, and publicize it so that shape note singers from nearby areas can join us if they wish. Our events are not to be confused with formal shape note conventions - we do not take minutes or conduct services. We just have a great time singing!

What better way to kick off a new season of singing by starting with a special sing at

Upper Canada Village Heritage Park

in Morrisburg, Ontario at Christ Church (built in 1837)

Sunday, October 4th, 2009

Meet at the gates at 1:00 p.m.

Schedule: Singers will meet with village coordinator before the singing starts. Singers are invited to sit in on the usual village church service (in the Christ Church building) at 1:30 p.m. as part of the "congregation". Singers stay on in the church to act as a “guest choir” for an hour or so thereafter.

Costuming will not be required

Admission to the village will be free for all singers involved - village gates open at 9:30 a.m. People would be free to arrive early and have lunch on site. Otherwise, make sure you have lunch before you get there. There is no provision for "dinner on the grounds", but those who want to can arrange to have a meal together after the singing.

NOTE: Those planning to arrive early will have to provide me with names so that we can present a list in advance. Otherwise, simply arrive at the gates for 1 PM.

Village Harmony World Music Youth Choir Returns to Nepean

Village Harmony, the unique and lively teen world music ensemble based in Vermont, led by Larry Gordon, Patty Cuyler and Robert Bouthillier, returns to Nepean for a concert on Friday, August 14 at 7:30 pm at Barrhaven United Church. Suggested admission at the door is $10, $5 for students and seniors. For information call : (613) 825-1707.

The concert will include traditional Quebecois music, American shape-note, gospel and Appalachian harmonies, traditional music from Caucasus Georgia and Bulgaria, South African songs and dances, and renaissance motets. The a cappella voices will be joined on many numbers by a band of fiddles, percussion and wind instruments.

Village Harmony is an umbrella organization based in Vermont which every summer sponsors ten ensembles like this one, both in New England and in numerous foreign countries. Each group develops its own unique sound, but all share common traits: a powerful, natural, unrestrained, vocal sound; a remarkable variety of vocal styles and timbres, as appropriate to the many varieties of ethnic and traditional music; and the visible, vibrant community among the singers and audience as they share in a joyous celebration of music. This particular group, drawn from eight US states and two provinces, rehearsed intensively for eight days at a retreat center on Lake Simcoe near Toronto before taking this program on the road for two weeks of performances. For further information visit the Village Harmony website: www.villageharmony.org

Special guest leader Robert Bouthillier from Quebec, leader of the trio Serre L'Ecoute, is one of the foremost collectors, teachers and interpreters of traditional Quebecois song. For decades he has been collecting songs from older singers in Quebec and the Acadian regions of New Brunswick and has created harmonized version of many of these for group performance. He is director of Conseil Quebecois du Patrimonie Vivant.

Larry Gordon and Patty Cuyler are the co-directors of Village Harmony and have a worldwide reputation for their extraordinary breadth of repertoire and experience with harmony singing traditions from many parts of the globe. Village Harmony's many recordings and songbooks will be available for sale at the concert.

SPECIAL NOTE: Volunteers requested to billet teens & adults, contact Susan for more information.

NEWS FROM CENTRAL ONTARIO:

For the forseeable future, the Toronto Shapenote Group's third-Wednesday singings will be in the Music Room of Bloor Street United Church at 300 Bloor St. W. (near Huron). That's a very short walk from the Spadina station on the Bloor line. There's paid parking behind the building; there may also be on-street parking in the surrrounding neighbourhood, but I couldn't possibly comment on that. We are to enter by the westernmost (courtyard) door off Bloor: the one with the "300" above it The Music Room, where the church's own choir holds its practices, is a long, narrow--but not too narrow--space with tall windows and a 14-foot ceiling. It has plenty of chairs but, since they are wooden and unpadded, you may want to bring your own cushioning.

"Local" or "practice" singings in Ontario (remove spaces to use Email addresses):
